ZETA completed the design and fabrication of an environmental stewardship center and seed lab in San Francisco. The lab features high-efficiency integrated mechanical and photovoltaic systems that demonstrate the pathway to net zero energy buildings. The entire design, permitting and fabrication for the facility was completed within six weeks with ZETA's in-house design and project management team managing all aspects of the project. The fabrication alone took 14 days.
The Seed and Plant Lab is designed to LEED Platinum certification standards. Sustainable building materials include engineered lumber from Sustainably Forested Industries, fiber cement siding, no VOC paint, and Green Seal certified finishes, among others. The ultra energy efficient building envelope includes high performance insulation and R-5 windows. The net zero energy system includes heat recovery ventilators, radiant panels and a 3.6 kW photovoltaic system.
Appliances, including the seed storage units, are Energy Star certified. The remains of the existing building on site, Building 1244, have been salvaged or recycled. Operations will focus on energy and water re-use efficiency. Visitors and staff from the Parks Conservancy, Presidio Trust, and National Park Service will be encouraged to carpool, use mass transit, bike, or walk.
