This 1,920 square foot public school building serves as a weight room for the Will Rogers Middle School. It includes thin film solar technology that produces 4.5kW of solar energy to power the fitness equipment energy loads, while saving over 20% of building energy costs through systems such as automated controls that operate lights based on the amount of natural day lighting.
The school building is based on the Eagle PC - a design with Pre-Check (PC) Approval by the Division of the State Architect (DSA) of California, accelerating the permitting process. The design combines a range of forward thinking strategies to maximize green building features, including:
- Solar tubes and clerestory windows which save up to 50% in lighting loads
- Thin film PV system to accommodate up to 4.50kw
- R-25 building envelope with superior airtight performance
- Reyclable exterior panels and recycled content throughout
- Low and no VOC paints
- Air economizer
- Air filtration system that minimizes moisture and allergens
- Energy Star HVAC
- FSC certified lumber
The VUMA series of classrooms are designed as a tool for both students and teachers enabling them to interact in an environment that spawns creative and critical thinking. Several studies have shown that superior acoustics, visual comfort, natural light and color perception have a correlation to student academic performance.
